Quinta da Ria Golf Course
18 holes Par 72 – 6016 Metres
Location:- Quinta da Ria, Eastern Algarve, Portugal
Quinta da Ria Golf Club opened in March 2002 and is another course designed
by the famous American designer Rocky Roquemore who is responsible for
several top golf clubs in the Algarve. With the sister course Quinta da
Cima the golf complex is now considered to be one of the finest destinations
for your Golf Holidays in Portugal.
The golf course is not long one, but it has well defended greens and
some holes are particularly well designed. The signature hole at Quinta
da Ria is probably the par-4 10th. At 425 metres the brain must be focused
before teeing off. The line looks to be left of centre, towards the bunker
and some low handicappers may even carry it. But beware! Trees and lie
may complicate your second shot, particularly the huge, ancient olive
standing guard in front of the green.
The back nine encircle the perimeter of the course, and are in complete
contrast to the first nine. They offer not simply more spectacular views,
but much more contrast in the holes themselves. The par-4 333 metre 14th
is a tough 90 degree dogleg. The drive must be accurate and your second
shot is challenged to take on an extensive lake, which is one of a total
of five on the course.
Quinta da Ria has a combination of trees, water and bunkers offering
parkland golf in a beautiful and breathtaking setting.
Facilities include:- Driving range, golf academy, putting green, pro-shop,
snack bar in the clubhouse, locker rooms.
COURSE REVIEW
Hole 1 is a Par 5 and 465 metres (White Tees) and is
SI 12
Quinta da Ria starts with a gentle Par 5 with stunning views of the ocean.
A very open fairway with two small bunkers on the right side just at driving
distance. Several scattered bunkers around the green will make you approach
shot very tricky.
Hole 2 is a Par 3 and 139 metres (White Tees) and is
SI 18
Quinta da Ria first Par 3 is fairly straight forward but the green needs
to be found with your tee shot as there are five bunkers around the green
to stop you from making Par.
Hole 3 is a Par 4 and 342 metres (White Tees) and is
SI 16
A tricky tee is required to avoid the bunker on the left and the olive
trees on the right. If you can drive over the hill then you should have
a shot iron shot to this big green that is guarded by a small lake and
bunker on the right. There is another bunker short right of the green.
Hole 4 is a Par 4 and 340 metres (White Tees) and is
SI 8
Back over the same hill you just came from and it’s a similar tee
shot. This time the olive trees to be avoided are on the left. A smaller
green that is again protected by two bunkers.
Hole 5a is a Par 3 and 113 metres (White Tees) and is
SI 14
Quinta da Ria has two tee option on the fifth hole and we played ‘5a’
which was slightly shorter than ‘5’. Both tee shots require
a navigation path across a large lake. The green is then well guarded
by bunkers on all sides.
Hole 6 is a Par 5 and 442 metres (White Tees) and is
SI 6
Uphill Par 5 that has two fairway bunkers ready to punish a stray drive.
The hole then dog legs right and there are six more bunkers to avoid including
a long snake like trap than runs from 100 yards out to almost the edge
of the green.
Hole 7 is a Par 4 and 360 metres (White Tees) and is
SI 2
The seventh hole now wanders back to the Quinta da Ria club house. A small
lake just in front of the tee box will grab your attention. The two bunkers
you will see, from the tee, directly in front of the green, are very deep
and your approach should be long to avoid these.
Hole 8 is a Par 4 and 358 metres (White Tees) and is
SI 10
The eight hole is very similar to the first and has the same views, out
towards the ocean. It’s a lot tighter with trees and heavy rough
on the right side. The green is not over protected but quite small and
undulating.
Hole 9 is a Par 4 and 344 metres (White Tees) and is
SI 4
A very straight Par 4 that is not too difficult once you avoid the fairway
bunker. However, don’t over hot your approach as the green has only
one bunker and that is at the rear.

Hole 10 is a Par 4 and 422 metres (White Tees) and is
SI 1
Quinta da Ria now starts to liven up a bit. SI 1 is a monster and a par
here will feel like a birdie. There is a large open fairway with scattered
olive trees daring your tee shot. A small bunker on the left is your natural
target as you need to be right to have a better shot over the huge lakes
that the green sits behind. Three more bunkers around the green add to
the difficultness of this great hole.
Hole 11 is a Par 5 and 482 metres (White Tees) and is
SI 7
The longest Par 5 at Quinta da Ria Golf Club is a genuine test for any
golfer. You are faced with an up hill drive with bunkers left and right
of the landing area before the hole turns left towards the green. The
green is well guarded particularly on the right side with a series of
small bunkers, seven in total.
Hole 12 is a Par 4 and 278 metres (White Tees) and is
SI 17
Quinta da Ria now gets quite beautiful on hole twelve. The whole runs
paralle with the ocean and on this short Par 4 you are distracted by the
stunning views. Olive trees are again dangerous and the green is well
defended by bunkers.
Hole 13 is a Par 3 and 188 metres (White Tees) and is
SI 9
The longest Par 3 on Quinta da Ria and probably the most difficult. If
the wind is up there the choice of clubs could be very extreme. Again,
lovely views and a well protected green with sand all around.
Hole 14 is a Par 4 and 321 metres (White Tees) and is
SI 11
A massive dog leg and some could be tempted to go for the green. But don’t!
Trust the score card, the green is over 300 yards away. Hit a nice drive
just in front of the lake and then its ‘risk and reward’.
Hole 15 is a Par 4 and 356 metres (White Tees) and is
SI 13
A very straight par 4 that has a tree lined fairway and only one bunker
on the fairway. The green is not very well protected and you should make
par here.
Hole 16 is a Par 5 and 453 metres (White Tees) and is
SI 5
A very tight teeing area as the trees are quite dense on the right. You
drive needs to be very accurate to avoid the lake (first one) on the right
and the bunker on the left. Once this is mastered you are then faced with
an approach shot over another lake. Going too far right will not help
as there are five bunkers right of the green for a loose shot. Possible
the best hole on the course.
Hole 17 is a Par 3 and 161 metres (White Tees) and is
SI 15
Accuracy is needed on the last Par 3 at Quinta da Ria. The bunker on the
right runs parallel to the green and the lake on the right will swallow
all sliced tee shots.
Hole 18 is a Par 4 and 390 metres (White Tees) and is
SI 3
Quinta da Ria finishes with a long, uphill Par 4. A small stream runs
up the right hand side and this is helped with four bunkers on the same
side. The green is also well guarded by four bunkers.
